SETUP PLANNER

Build the right enclosure.

Choose a species and life stage to create a practical starting plan from ArachniDex care information.

Recommendations combine the species’ care sheet with the life stage selected. Always use observation and the full guide alongside this plan.

Abdomegaphobema mesomelas

Costa Rican Red Leg

Terrestrial / Burrowing (likes to construct narrow burrows)

12-14 cmADULT SIZE
Enclosure

20 × 20 × 25 cm (W × D × H)

Prioritise deep, firm substrate and a starter burrow or hide.

Substrate depth

A 3-to-4+ inch depth (depending on life stage) made from a mix of organic topsoil, coconut fiber (Eco Earth), and peat moss. Maintain a moisture gradient by keeping one side or corner damp while letting the surface on the other side dry out slightly.

Adult dimensions are a practical starting point. Avoid oversizing: secure cover and a usable layout matter more than empty space.

Ventilation

Critical due to the high humidity requirement combined with cooler temperatures; good cross-ventilation prevents stagnant, stuffy air and mould growth.

Match airflow to the species’ moisture needs rather than relying on a fixed enclosure type.

Temperature

18–22°C

Use a reliable thermometer and avoid direct heat sources inside the enclosure.

Humidity

70–80%

Provide a moisture gradient where appropriate; the substrate should never be kept unnecessarily wet.

Water

Must have a shallow, clean water dish available at all times. They will also drink droplets from misting or damp substrate

Refresh it regularly and keep it easy to reach during routine checks.

Hide / retreat

A starter burrow under cork bark or a firm hide gives a safe beginning.

A well-placed retreat matters more than a decorative open enclosure.

Decor

Terrestrial, wider than tall (min. 18x18-inch footprint for adults). Good cross-ventilation is critical to prevent mould.

Keep every feature stable, purposeful and easy to inspect.
